The cement and concrete sector is fully committed to achieving significant sustainability progress. The GCCA gathers key data recording the industry’s sustainability commitments. The GNR (“GCCA in NumbeRs”) is a key tool in how key sustainability progress is monitored and reported.

In 2026, we collected data for calendar year 2024, maintaining the 2-year non-disclosure period required by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) undertakings for the UK.
- The 2024 Cement Industry GNR data show a 25%* reduction in CO2 per tonne of cementitious has been achieved since 1990
- The proportion of alternative fuels used is 13** times greater than in 1990
- Energy efficiency has improved by 17% since 1990
- Clinker to Cementitious ratio shows an improvement of 11%*** since 1990.
*Note 25% is a rounded figure – actual figure accurate to two decimal places is 25.31 %. This is 0.24 percentage point improvement since 2023.
**Note 13 times is a rounded figure – actual figure, accurate to one decimal place, is 12.8 times. This is up from 12.2 times in 2023.

About the GNR – GCCA Cement CO2 and Energy Management Protocol
The GNR database (previously the Cement Sustainability Initiative) has been fully managed and operated by GCCA since 2018. Data is collected and updated every year in June/July. We collect all the data on GNR using GCCA Cement CO2and Energy Management Protocol. Currently we are running our data collection on V3.1 which will be replaced with V4.2 coming September 2027.

How to access and contribute to GNR Data?
The GNR database is open and transparent to interested parties. To support interested parties to use and interpret our comprehensive data, we provide detailed data and regional data.
Data is available for: 1990, 2000, and 2005 till 2024. Each year we update the data in June-July period. The regions and countries for which data are available are listed here in accordance with anti-trust law and confidentiality requirements. The list of parameters and indicators available is available here.

Note: Upon registration, account activation takes approximately two hours, resulting in delayed access. This timeframe enables us to implement necessary internal system and procedure updates to facilitate user onboarding.
GNR is a GCCA project, but it is also contributed to by non-GCCA member companies. (Cement Europe and FICEM are also key data contributors.). Contributing the data on GNR comes with significant benefits to the companies.
Individual queries about specific issues will be answered within the strict confidentiality and anti-trust law requirements which the PMC is bound to adhere to.
Data can be accessed via the dedicated data visualisation platform. Access is granted by the independent third-party service provider – Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC). PwC is our project management consultant which hosts our GNR data on their data platform.
