Record entries as GCCA closes 2nd annual “Concrete in Life” global photography competition

Competition finished with more than 10,000 professional and amateur photo entries showcasing concrete’s role and beauty in everyday life

(London: 15 December 2020) The Global Cement and Concrete Association’s (GCCA) second annual “Concrete in Life” photography competition has finished with a record number of entries for 2020. The GCCA received more than 10,000 entries from across the globe, from both amateur and professional photographers, across three different categories: urban design and use, infrastructure and concrete in daily life.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, competition entrants found ways to highlight the vital role that concrete plays in everyday life, with photos that showcase the many practical, beautiful and sustainable ways that the material is used around the world.

The judging panel will now convene to select one winner and one runner-up for both professional and amateur entries across each category. One overall winner for the “Best Concrete in Life” photo will also be awarded the $10,000 (USD) prize. The winners will be announced in January 2021.

The 2020 “Concrete in Life” judging panel is:

  • John Fairley, Photographer and Creative Director of Curious Productions
  • Gabriele Galimberti, National Geographic photographer
  • Gian Luca Barone, Senior Associate of Zaha Hadid Architects
  • Dinah McLeod, Chief Executive of the GCCA

Dinah McLeod, GCCA Chief Executive said: “We are delighted that this year’s ‘Concrete in Life’ competition drew a record number of entries, underscoring how essential concrete is not only to the built environment in supporting our daily lives throughout these challenging times. We look forward to announcing the winning entries and showcasing the innovative and beautiful ways that they portray this vital material.

The quality of photos is outstanding, and we’ve seen entries from across the world. We would like to thank everyone for participating in the competition and we look forward to announcing the winners in January.”
