Oficemen Roadmap – the 5C methodology

The Spanish cement industry fully supports the objectives of the European Green Deal. For this reason, at the end of 2020, Oficemen (The Spanish Cement Association) presented ‘The Spanish roadmap to achieve climate neutrality by 2050’, – which is currently in the process of being updated -, setting out our ambition to reach net zero GHG emissions along the cement and concrete value chain by 2050.

What we call the “5C methodology”: Clinker, Cement, Concrete, Construction and (re)Carbonation – will require the deployment of existing and new technologies. These include for instance the use of non-recyclable and biomass waste to replace fossil fuels; more energy-efficient kilns; the development of innovative low-clinker cements; the deployment of breakthrough carbon capture and storage/use technologies (CCUS); and optimised concrete mixes and building techniques. Our carbon neutrality roadmap looks in detail at the role of these technologies in reducing emissions at each stage of the cement and concrete value chain.
