Concrete in Daily Life
Description:
Sophie Cochon @sophiedecors Location: Sunniberg Bridge - Klosters in the Canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Concrete is a construction material used for real works of art, with architectural forms that are both innovative and aesthetic. The Sunniberg road bridge (near Klosters in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland) with cable-stayed cables, 525 meters long and curved in a radius of 500 meters, bears witness to this: its impressive and elegant shape discreetly spans the valley. Yet monumental, its slender structure remains delicate and blends in perfectly with the surrounding nature. This architectural masterpiece is all the more fascinating because it combines the technical use of concrete in civil engineering with a playful use as a sports support for climbing (more than 600 meters of course spread over 22 routes, the longest of which measures 55 meters). Concrete, then compared to a rock wall, can become as beautiful as stone, as Auguste Perret, a French architect specializing in reinforced concrete, said (“My concrete is more beautiful than stone” 1944).
