Concrete Dome
Description:
Pedro Ajuriaguerra Location: Niemeyer Cultural Center, Aviles SPAIN The dome for the Oscar Niemeyer Cultural Center Museum in the city of Avilés is made of reinforced concrete. It is an open space of approximately 4,000 square meters intended for exhibitions and artistic activities of various kinds. The thickness of the concrete section of the dome is variable from 35 cm at the start to 20 at a development of 2.35 m. and from 20 to 15cm at 4.65 m. following development. From there the thickness remains constant until the key at a level of 18.05. To make this concrete dome, a PVC membrane has been inflated and pressurised. The technique is designed and executed by Structures DOMO S. A. Once pressurised, a three-centimeter-thick rigid polyurethane foam was projected onto its interior face, and then the reinforcements towards the interior of the polyurethane and concrete gunning was carried out on the reinforcement with those variations in its thickness outlined. The concrete exterior is also used by citizens to walk and carry out activities such as riding a bike, skating or playing with their children.
