Andrew Minson appointed Concrete & Sustainable Construction Director for GCCA

The Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) today announced the appointment of Dr Andrew Minson as Concrete and Sustainable Construction Director. He will take up the role in early January 2019 and will be based at the association’s offices in London.

Andrew joins the GCCA from the Mineral Products Association in the UK where he is Executive Director for both The Concrete Centre and British Precast. Andrew will report to incoming GCCA Chief Executive, Benjamin Sporton and will be a member of the executive team.

In his new role, Andrew will lead GCCA’s work promoting the sustainability value of concrete in the future of construction. This will include improving understanding of concrete’s lifecycle and its role in the circular economy. Andrew will also lead work with industry partners developing new global sustainability guidelines for concrete.

Over his career Andrew has built a detailed knowledge of the construction industry, sustainability and how the concrete sector can play a positive role now and in the future.  He has led the Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy for the UK since 2009 – a strategy that encompasses the whole life of the material from sourcing constituents to beyond project demolition.  He is co-author of the Wiley published “Sustainable Concrete Solutions”. Andrew gained a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Queensland before winning a Rhodes Scholarship to University of Oxford.  He worked for global engineering consultant Arup for ten years before joining the Concrete Centre.  He is a Fellow of both the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Benjamin Sporton, GCCA Chief Executive-designate said: “Andrew’s broad experience and expertise will be essential to GCCA as he leads our work to achieve global recognition of concrete as the sustainable building material of choice. We are excited to have Andrew take on this leading role in our organisation.”

Andrew Minson said: “I am delighted to be taking on this role at the GCCA, working in a sector which contributes so much to a safe, resilient and resource efficient built environment. Concrete as a material is so versatile and has such a range of inherent performance benefits that it can be used by the construction industry to deliver great projects. I look forward to bringing together best practice from around the world with the latest thinking to show how concrete can lead to the best sustainable outcomes for society.”

This appointment means the line-up of the GCCA executive team will soon be complete with the announcement of a new Communications & Policy Director expected shortly.
