Concrete in Daily Life
Description:
Alison Stirling @StirlingAlison Location: Ratcliffe-on-Soar, Nottinghamshire, UK. The picture is of six concrete cooling towers dominating the skyline of a farmers field in rural England. A domestic caravan lies in the foreground and sheep graze under the shadow of these monumental structures. I am interested in the contrast and complicity of the industrial material of concrete in the countryside setting. The role of concrete is both functional and familiar but also in creates a sculptural beauty, where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The Power station is the last remaining coal fired power station in the UK and is due to close in September 2024.
